Setting Up Web Content Filter

Summary:
Learn how to setup Metronet's web content filter.

The following guide shows you how to change Internet Explorer so that it uses the web content filter. If you use a different browser, this guide will still be useful in helping you get setup. For other browsers, read their help sections on how to access their advanced settings.

1. From within Internet Explorer, click Tools.
2. Select Internet Options and a window will open.
3. In that window click the Connections tab.
4. Equipment Specific:

If you are using a broadband router:
In the Connections section, click LAN Settings to get to the Proxy Server options.

If you are using a broadband modem:
In the Connections section you will see Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings at the top of this window. You should highlight the broaband modem connection and click on Settings.

Now you should follow the instructions to do one of the below options, depending on your needs. We recommend you follow the Manually specify the PAC file instructions.

Manually specify the PAC file
Tick the tickbox labeled Use automatic configuration script and make sure that the Automatically Detect Settings tickbox is turned off.

Then enter the URL: http://proxy.metronet.co.uk/.

After restarting Internet Explorer, you should be using the proxy server.

To disable the proxy server settings
Make sure all the tickboxes in the LAN Settings window are un-ticked.

Manually setup to use a proxy server
Un-tick all the tickboxes in the LAN Settings window, except for Use a Proxy Server for your LAN. Do not tick any of the textboxes you are presented with on this windows, just click on Advanced.

A new window will appear and only under the 'HTTP' field enter in:
Proxy Address To Use: proxy.metronet.co.uk
Port: 80

You should also tick the box Bypass proxy server for local addresses. If you then click on all the OK buttons you should be manually setup to use the proxy server at all times.

Note: You should only use this method if the Manually Specify The PAC File method fails to work.
